Mason County is the only place in Texas where topaz is found, and the Lindsay Ranch is one of three ranches that allow topaz hunting. Mason County is part of the Llano Uplife and our old rocks have been pushed to the top. Topaz was designated the Texas state gem in 1969 and the Lone Star cut was designated the state cut in 1979. Agate is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. “Cryptocrystalline” means that the crystals in the stone are too tiny to see individually. Agate is the quartz gem for which the Big Bend area is best known. Agate is usually multicolored and at least partly translucent or transparent. The colors occur in patterns that are truly incredible.
